It may seem like a strange question to ask why breast cancer awareness matters, but far too many women are still victims of this disease.
This disease is of particular importance to us at RMI, as a core aspect of our practice is women’s services. Many of our radiologists are specialized in women’s imaging with significant expertise in mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. The fight against breast cancer drives what they do.
The statistics for breast cancer are grim. For Genesee County, 1.2 in 1000 women will develop breast cancer annually, with Lapeer having 1.03 in 1000 and Oakland (location of our Novi office) seeing 1.3 in 1000 being stricken annually. These numbers from the State Cancer Profiles website also note the incidence numbers are “stable” in all three counties – meaning rates are not dropping.
Although survival rates are based on numerous factors, a rule of thumb is the earlier cancerous cells are discovered the greater the survival rate. Early detection, as with so many diseases, is crucial. (See the Susan G. Komen page on survival rates.) This means monthly self-exams, annual mammograms, and a mindful awareness of family history are important. Vigilance is key.
The awareness created through marketing and events by organizations such as Marketing Strides Against Breast Cancer this month and throughout the year keep the fight against breast cancer alive. Fundraising from such organizations fuels research, promotes awareness of self-exam and the need for annual mammograms, and helps those women with breast cancer find and take advantage of resources available to them.
Each year we participate by raising funds for Making Strides, reaching out to other organizations in the community, and providing literature and digital content to area women and their physicians to build awareness.
In addition, we are strongly committed to helping women get the screenings they need if they cannot afford them. Each year, we offer free mammograms to women 40+ who don’t have insurance as a way to give back to our communities. Upcoming dates are Oct. 19 at our Lapeer office, and Nov. 12 at our Flint and Novi offices. More information is available on our free UltimateMamm® website.
